By BBC Maestro

Gin has been a staple in the world of mixology for centuries, offering a versatile base for a wide range of cocktails.

Whether you enjoy a refreshing citrus twist or a more botanical depth of flavour, there’s a gin cocktail to suit every palate. Here are six classic gin cocktails you need to try, each with its own unique character and history.

1. The Gin and Tonic

One of the most well-known and widely enjoyed gin drinks, the Gin and Tonic is a simple yet sophisticated classic. Originating from British colonial India, where tonic water containing quinine was consumed for its anti-malarial properties, the addition of gin turned this medicinal drink into a refreshing cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 50ml gin
  • 150ml tonic water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime or lemon wedge, for garnish

Method:

  1. Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.
  1. Pour in the gin.
  1. Top up with tonic water and stir gently.
  1. Garnish with a lime or lemon wedge.

This drink is customisable depending on the type of gin and tonic water used, making it a favourite among gin lovers worldwide.

2. The Martini

Arguably one of the best gin cocktails, the Martini is synonymous with sophistication and elegance. Popularised by figures such as James Bond, this drink is perfect for those who enjoy a strong yet balanced cocktail.

Ingredients:

  • 60ml gin
  • 10ml dry vermouth
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon twist or olive, for garnish

Method:

  1. Fill a mixing glass with ice and add the gin and vermouth.
  1. Stir well until chilled, then strain into a chilled martini glass.

3. The Negroni

This famous gin cocktail is the perfect balance of bitterness, sweetness, and botanical complexity.
